Food adventures: Peter Pan Donut and Pastry Shop (Brooklyn, NY)

I’ll admit it. I’m a sucker for doughnuts. It’s a truly guilty pleasure of mine and please don’t bring up the actually calorie count. I’m trying to stay reasonable, but I crave a dose of sugary goodness on a regular basis. And some of the best doughnuts that I have had in New York City can be found in Greenpoint at Peter Pan Donut and Pastry Shop.

My friend and I went to check it out a couple of weeks ago after I saw the shop on Food Insider. It’s an old-school 60s donut shop with an authentic interior including an old counter (although in times of COVID-19, they only offer takeout). The operation is held together by a small unit of sales assistants who make sure that the turn over runs as quickly as possible.

To be honest, the doughnuts look quite average, although the selection is wide, they focus on the classics. No fancy colors, ingredients or shapes like some other places. But, oh my, get yourself ready for light, fluffy, delicious goodness. These are, hands down, the best yeast doughnuts that I have had in New York. The dough looks heavy, but feels light and airy. And the filling brings it all together.

During this first visit, I picked up a Coconut Cream, an Old Fashion Cream Crumb and a classic Jelly Doughnut. All three were delicious, with the Coconut Cream being my favorite. It includes a light and silky, well balanced marshmallow cream, that more or less stole the show.

An additional highlight: A doughnut only costs $1.25!!! 😱 Either the owners want to keep their pastries affordable or (as my friend jokingly suggested) someone forgot to explain to them that their shop is in New York City 😂 You won’t hear me complaining. Just make sure to bring cash (no cards or mobile payment accepted) and indulge in this heavenly goodness.
